In order to integrate mastication in clinical practice, it becomes necessary to look at the occlusal faces of posterior teeth under a completely different angle.
It’s a change of paradigm, which requires to take into account the functional role of the occlusal contacts during deglutition and of the guidances and supports on cusps slope during mastication. Notably by observing occlusal kinetics in the real centripetal orientation of the mastication cycles.
It’s not so easy to invert clinical reflexes, when teaching of a so-called functional kinetics is always done in reverse orientation.
It’s why an adapted training becomes generally necessary.
The description and the understanding of the natural functioning scheme, is followed by a workshop on models, then in clinical practice. What allows to progressively become familiar with this approach.
To improve knowledges, an University Diploma of Functional Occlusion has been created by the University of Strasbourg (France), and start at the 2015-2016 academic year.

In addition to this site,  several approaches are possible and can be associated:

Conferences, from one hour to one day, feature many clinical videos. They are organized by diverse continuing education and scientific associations and University Diplomas

Courses with workshops (two days sharing courses and clinical applications in a dental office with a maximum of 10 participants). They are generally organized by a closed group. Open groups will be announced online.

Conferences, trainings and workshops, focused on implant occlusion, are regularly organized by  Zimmer Dental France
